Top Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Sites at Molokini Crater
World class diving spots from Reef's End to the Back Wall.
Molokini Crater is one of Hawaii's most popular dive sites because it provides a range of opportunities from beginning snorkeling to advanced scuba diving.
The relatively shallow crater basin at Molokini is enjoyed by beginners while the underwater wall is a medium depth that is good for intermediate divers. The steep back wall drops hundreds of feet and is a favorite of expert scuba divers.
Beginners are advised to stay within the natural protecting barrier of the crater walls, while those who are more skilled often prefer to explore outside of the crater including the famous Back Wall.
The Reef's End dive starts on the inside of Molokini Crater and ventures along the coral reef where the depth can be as little as six feet beneath the surface.
Shark Ledges is a dive site inside Molokini Crater and extending to a depth of about 160 feet below the surface. The ocean currents are often quite strong at the place where the outside of the crater meets the inside of the crater, and these currents will tend to pull you toward the Back Wall. Be aware of the currents and stay within the crater to avoid being dragged into an area where you do not want to be.
The Back Wall is considered one of the best dives in Hawaii, and typically involves the boat operator letting the divers off above the point where the wall begins its descent. This renowned wall dive drops precipitously to more than 300 feet into the crystal clear blue water.
Only expert scuba divers should attempt the Back Wall dive due to the area's exposure to the open ocean and the depths exceeding 300 feet. Divers on the Back Wall are advised to keep a close eye on their depth gauge.
Whenever you are snorkeling or scuba diving at Molokini make sure to follow all proper safety precautions including the advice of your experienced dive and snorkel tour boat operators.
